The One Who Chose Freedom — No Matter the Cost
She was never meant to stay.
And no one had ever managed to stop her.
Princess of Kardarkam, Okame Nepeta had never known how to accept the walls built around her.
Where others saw a place to belong, she saw a boundary to cross.
The first time she jumped the wall, she didn’t think.
Not really.
She looked at the white stones—too smooth, too perfect, too final—then lifted her gaze to the sky. And in that sky, there was something the palace could never give her.
Space.
So she jumped.
“You’re going to get scolded again.”
Akari didn’t look up from her book. Sitting cross-legged on the window ledge, perfectly straight—perfectly composed, at least on the surface.
Okame already had one foot outside.
“Maybe.”
“Definitely.”
A silence passed between them. Then Akari’s ears flicked ever so slightly.
“…Where are you going this time?”
Okame breathed in the evening air, already slipping through her fingers.
“I don’t know yet.”
“You never do.”
A smile curved her lips.
“That’s what makes it good.”
A beat. Then, more quietly:
“You coming?”
Akari finally looked up. Her gaze was serious—too serious—but not entirely.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’ll cover for you.”
Okame’s smile widened.
“You’re the best.”
“I know.”
The world at night was different. The guards became silhouettes, the paths unfolded in new ways, and every scent came alive. The wind carried invisible traces—directions, presences.
Okame moved forward without fear.
Not because she was reckless, but because she felt alive. Every step was a choice. Every turn, a possibility.
She was not made to wait. Nor to sit still like a precious object, protected but never used. She wanted to see, to touch, to understand—to fall if she had to, but to fall while moving forward.
A sound.
Faint. Too faint.
She froze. Her ears lifted, her gaze locked into the darkness, her breathing shifted.
Not the wind. Not an animal.
Someone.
She should have left. She knew that.
But her heart quickened—not with fear, never—but with momentum.
“Okame…”
Akari’s voice—or its echo—passed through her mind like a shadow.
“Don’t do anything stupid.”
A smile flickered.
“Too late.”
She stepped forward.
A sound.
Subtle. Muffled. Almost nothing.
But not to her.
Her ears twitched. Her gaze slid toward the shadows, unhurried. She already understood.
Two presences.
Too heavy to be discreet. Too hesitant to be truly dangerous… at least on the surface.
Okame didn’t slow down.
She simply brought her hand to her hip.
A breath.
Then—
clack.
The weapon unfurled in a smooth, fluid motion—almost alive. A slender blade extended into a chain that shimmered faintly in the night air.
Silence.
In the shadows, the two figures froze.
She hadn’t attacked.
She wasn’t even really looking at them.
But they knew.
A glance exchanged. A hesitation.
Then—
They stepped back.
One step.
Then two.
And suddenly, without a word, they turned and disappeared into the night.
Okame remained still for a moment longer.
Then she eased the tension of her weapon, the chain softening before settling back against her.
A breath slipped past her lips.
No smile.
Not this time.
Only a quiet certainty.
She wasn’t alone in the night.
But the night…
was not against her either.
Much later, lying beneath the moons, she would think back to that exact moment—to that step too far, and everything it had set in motion.
“Do you think they’ll scold me?”
She had laughed when she asked it, but that wasn’t the real question.
The real one was:
Would I do it again?
Yes.
Without hesitation.
Because it wasn’t the escape that mattered. Not even the danger.
It was that suspended moment—between two worlds, between the palace and the outside.
And now that she had tasted it…
she could never become well-behaved again.
She didn’t yet know that one day, along that very path she refused to abandon, she would meet the one who would change her life—Arius Lovelace.
And that, for the first time…
she would hesitate.
