Robert Wallace never once mentioned Jade’s mother.
In the halls of the estate, only a single truth was known: the young woman had died giving birth. Nothing more. Nothing less.
That day, the knight remained in the room, beside the bed, from beginning to end.
When the midwife presented him with the newborn, his expression did not change. A brief nod, as precise as a military command, replaced any need for words.

Seated, unmoving, his hand resting against his wife’s, he followed each breath without uttering a single unnecessary word. When the physician gave him a discreet signal, a faint sheen of moisture filled his eyes.
The child was born, washed, then wrapped in a pale cloth.
When they moved to present the child to him, his gaze remained fixed on the young woman. The physician understood at once.
Silence settled.
“Jade… I want her to be named Jade,” she murmured.
Robert nodded.
“She must be raised as a lady…”
A faint smile crossed his lips.
“You don’t want her to follow in your footsteps.”
A breath—almost a laugh.
“You know what I mean…”
She gestured weakly, as if referring to something that should not be named.
“I don’t want it to become her prison.”
Robert inclined his head.
“I will teach her how to carry herself. And I will let her choose the rest.”
Her fingers tightened briefly around his.
“You know… since the first time, I have alwa—”
His hands rose instinctively, covering his eyes as he pressed his forehead against his clasped fingers, as if to absorb the shock.
A small cry brought him back to the present.
Robert leaned forward and pressed a kiss to her lips.
He did not lift his head.
At that moment, the child cried.
Robert took her into his arms.
“Jade…”

When he straightened, he did not look back.
From that day onward, Robert Wallace no longer lived for himself.
His existence took shape like a battle strategy: each day followed a precise order, with no room for the unforeseen, no tolerance for hesitation.
