Concepts

Concepts bring together the abstract or structural elements that explain how the world functions. They do not belong to immediate scenery or visible action, but to the deeper mechanisms that organize society, regulate power relations, and shape the choices available to characters. Systems, institutions, resources, laws, organizations, implicit or explicit rules: everything that structures the world without necessarily appearing on the surface belongs to this category.

In a fantasy saga, these elements are rarely explained directly. They are suggested through narration, embedded in dialogue, conflict, or strategic decisions. Yet they form the backbone of the world. A debt, a hierarchy, a magical constraint, a legal framework, or a political organization is never a mere detail; it is a narrative lever that directly influences the plot and the characters’ trajectories. Concept illustrations make these invisible forces tangible, anchoring the story in a coherent and believable framework.

This section is fully aligned with a worldbuilding approach. It helps clarify why certain actions are possible and others are not, why power holds, weakens, or transforms, and how societies respond to crises, resources, or internal change. Concepts naturally interact with buildings, which embody institutions and centers of power; with locations, where rules apply in concrete ways; and with maps, which reveal the true scale of the systems at work.

They also shape the role of creatures, whether integrated, exploited, or rejected according to the world’s laws, beliefs, and social structures. Whether dealing with magic systems, progression mechanics, or political organizations, each illustrated concept adds depth to the universe without weighing down the narrative.

These illustrations are meant to evolve alongside the saga. As the universe expands, new territories emerge, and stakes grow more complex, systems become clearer, institutions are revealed, and mechanisms gain definition. Concepts thus form the silent framework upon which the entire world rests.
